Taiwan Reviews Bus Accidents of Chinese Tourists

Taiwanese officials say a lack of qualified drivers may be contributing to bus accidents involving mainland Chinese tourists, after the 11th major incident in four years.

A review of road safety followed a Saturday accident in which a bus overturned on a highway in northern Taiwan, killing the driver and injuring 38 Chinese tourists, four critically.

Tourism association official Hsiao Po-jen says an average of 6,000 mainlanders arrive in Taiwan daily despite a shortage of bus drivers to handle them.

Tourism bureau official Liu Hsi-lin says mainland tourists typically take an eight-day across-the-island bus tour that often leaves drivers overworked or speeding to complete tight schedules.
