Heavy Storms in Central South Africa Kill 2

June 25, 2012

Officials say heavy storms across central South Africa killed a woman at her farmhouse and a man holidaying at a popular resort.

Police spokeswoman Majang Skalkie said Sunday that the woman died when high winds ripped the roof from her home near Bethlehem, about 260 kilometers (160 miles) south of Johannesburg.

Skalkie said Saturday’s storm damaged several other homes and downed power lines.

Craig Lambinon, spokesman for South Africa’s National Sea Rescue Institute, said the man was among 14 young adults holidaying at the Vaal Dam water resort just south of Johannesburg.

Lambinon said the house in which the group was staying was one of three that collapsed in what he described as a tornado.

The South African Weather Service could not confirm a tornado struck.
