Up to 10 Dead in Haiti in Week of Heavy Rains

The Haitian government says up to 10 people have died last week because of almost unabated rainfall in the southern and western parts of the country.

Joseph Edgard Celestin of Haiti’s Civil Protection Office issued an update Friday on the damage brought by the steady rain.

Ten people were reported dead, and eight of them perished while trying to cross rivers. One person is reported missing.

Flooding has been extensive. More than 3,000 homes in a seaside shanty of Haiti’s capital have flooded. More than 200 people have sought temporary shelter.

The annual rainy season officially began this month but it’s been raining regularly since March.

Almost 500,000 Haitians are still homeless since the powerful earthquake more than two years ago.
