Honda Fires 400 in Brazil; Japan Quake Cuts Parts

Honda is firing 400 workers at a car factory in Brazil because of a lack of parts from Japan following that nation’s earthquake.

A Honda spokesman in Sao Paulo says Thursday that the plant also is reducing its output from 600 units a day to 300 starting June 6.

In a statement, Honda says it’s having trouble finding replacements for various electronic components for its Civic, City and Fit models.

Honda says it began talks with auto unions about the situation last week, but couldn’t reach an alternative to the firings.

Union officials say workers should not be punished for business failings due to natural disasters.
