I run the maritime security division of Survival Consultants International. Why do these shipping companies play Russian Roulette with the lives of their crews and the value of their cargo? A team of our men on that ship would have averted the hijacking and the cost is negligible compared to what they are going to have to pay in ransom. Truly a case of penny wise and pound foolish. http://www.survivalconsultants.com

    JD…you are spot on.
There are rules out there where no weapons can be on board ships. However, if there is a will, there is a way and the rules can be changed. A no brainer. Blow those scum sucking vermin right out of the water as soon as they are spotted.

There is no law that states that you cannot have a water canon on board the ship. Set that thing up, boost the pressure to about 600 pounds. Shield your operator good from gunfire and let him wash them right out of their boats. A good water canon will cut a small boat in two pieces.

The convention that says no weapons is another example of those sorts of things only harming those who obey to them. I don’t know about you guys, but if I worked for Maersk or whatever and knew I was going that way, I’d buy a friggin arsenal for the ship. The sad thing is there are people out there who think YOU arming yourself in defense of these animals would only provoke them to violence, and think it’s wrong to do so. Stupid liberals.

Twenty four sailors & three pirates? Even without weapons it seems something is very wrong here.

I concur with all comments. Civilized people need to wake up and start sending a strong message to these 4th world pieces of human garbage that this won’t be tolerated. Pirates should be shot on sight. It’s the only deterrant they might understand. As for the “laws” that ban weapons on ships…..bullchit. You fight fire with fire. The shipping companies who pay ransom are also to blame. They create an incentive for more hijacks. They need to eliminate the profit motive. If they had the balls to do it, here’s what would make an impact. Next time these punks jack a ship and demand a ransom, refuse the demand and give them 1 hour to get off the ship without harming anyone. If they refuse, send in an international or mercenary swat team to wipe them out. If they kill the crew, maybe the world will finally get angry and support more aggressive action.
