I am not up on my pirating but why don’t these shipping companies provide armed protection for their ships when they know they are heading into a dangerous area? Someone needs to put these pirates out of business….

I wonder what the Saudis will do with the ship that was just hijacked?? My guess is that will not fool around with these criminals….

I’m thinking that the navies of the world that have interests in that area should put in a few Q-ships out there.. and sink any pirates that approach their vessels.

The world navies should quit talking and act. The world navies should put a blockage over all Somali ports, and if any pirates try to hijack a ship the navies will sink them on sight. These pirate do not listen to talk, but action will send a message to the pirates.

The only message that I read here is that they’re gonna get a million bucks…

This is why you don’t deal with terrorists – and quite frankly, a pirate is the same as a terrorist.

This negotiation crap needs to stop – They are what they are – bottom feeding scum that needs to be dealt with in a way that they’ll understand. You can bet they only have to be blown out of the water once to get the right message…

I think there is a law outlawing private merchant vessels from having armament. And of course all the countries of the world have to kiss up to the warm-and-fuzzy attitude that these are poor and misunderstood individuals who have been down trodden all of their lives and we shouldn’t judge them so harshly. don’t worry, the UN will step up soon and take care of problem.

A fraction of the money spent on ransoms could be put to use with a stategically placed air assault response company. Call it Blackwater, Bluewater, Bloodwater…whatever….a contractor hired by the shipping companies in a pooled risk situation (same concept that started our business on day one). With 1.75 million capital I’ll be glad to start the company. I’ll hire my retired Air Force buds, refurbish a few AC-47’s with one mini-gun hanging out the hatch of each Gooney Bird and be on call from positions covering the entire danger area. We’ll buy the radar to detect the pirates vessels for each ship and lease them to the owners of the ships. We may miss a few in the beginning but when the work gets out that their pirate scum buddies were blown to powder before they approached a ship a deterrent will have been established.

    ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!

Ok, seriously-this won’t get fixed until it really starts getting expensive for the companies who insure the boats and their cargoes or if the maritime insurers jack up the rates so high for the ocverage that the companies owning and the countries involved in high seas commerce say enoughs enough. I’m guessing that right now, this just isn’t important enough for any of the parties right now.

In reading more on this, there is a more protected route but some ships are not following it. The pirates have eleven, count em, eleven, ships being held hostage. They just let one go for a million…….Doesn’t seem like anyone is handling this the right way.
