The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Board of Directors approved the application of members in Western Australia to form a new chapter at its Sept. 29 board meeting.

In addition to the 150 chapters, 31 sections and 60 student sections in the U.S., ASSE also has chapters in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and member sections in Ecuador and Egypt. As of mid-September ASSE had more than 900 international members currently residing in 73 countries including Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad West Indies, Brazil, China, Italy, Jamaica, Venezuela, Scotland, Nigeria and Russia. The new ASSE Western Australia chapter has more than 50 members.

“Safety knows no borders,” ASSE President Jack Dobson, Jr., said. “The international business focus on occupational safety, health and the environment continues to grow, as illustrated by the numbers of ASSE members spread throughout the world. We provide all of our members with many services including opportunities to enhance their professional development, network with other practitioners worldwide and access to professional resources to help them in their job and communicate how increased workplace safety positively affects employers and employees and increases the quality of life.”

In addition, ASSE is a founding member of the International Network of Safety and Health Practitioner Organizations (INSHPO, www.inshpo.org). INSHPO provides a venue for practitioner organizations from around the world to promote, develop and access international information pertinent to the profession of occupational safety, health and the environment.
