While most of Scotland braces for the upcoming G8 summit in Edinburgh, some 100 or so triathletes have a different concern. They’re scheduled to compete in a triathlon around and in Scotland’s legendary Loch Ness on July 23, and they’re worried about the monster, affectionately known as “Nessie,” who’s said to inhabit the dark waters of the Loch.
The competitors, who come from France, South Africa, Italy and Germany, as well as the U.K., will swim two laps in Loch Ness’ Urquhart Bay. They’ve apparently found a solution to their concerns, however. According to a report in The Scotsman, The National Insurance and Guarantee Corporation Ltd. (NIG), the insurance arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, has come to the rescue by providing insurance cover of up to 1 million pounds ($1.76 million) for any athlete, who’s actually bitten by the monster.
If this catches on, it could open a whole new field of “monster coverage.” Cross country skiers in the U.S. and Canada could be insured against attacks by roving Sasquatch, while Himalayan mountain climbers will need similar coverage when they invade the domain of the Yeti.
