Everyone should attend and recognize the importance of diversity in the insurance industry where little diversity has existed (the prejudice of which is evidenced by charging blacks higher premiums for the same coverage).
Blacks have historically been, and still continue to be, discriminated against in job opportunities in insurance. Anyone who supports the cause of diversity is more than welcome, and encouraged, to attend.
Actuarial organizations in the US have long sought to increase membership from the diverse minorities throughout the country. Becoming an actuary is a long and difficult task. Organizations of actuaries such as the IABA reach out to young students who have not heard of the actuarial profession, the education and hard work necessary to pass all of the actuarial exams, and the opportunities available to those who succeed.
Whether or not the previous negative comments are truly racially motivated or not, they are inappropriate, and anti-productive. Diversity, of all types, in the actuarial ranks is surely a noble goal.
