New Tool in IBC’s Arsenal to Fight Crime

July 24, 2003

A new tool has been introduced by Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) that reportedly makes it faster and easier for people working in the insurance industry to submit claims information, particularly on suspicious claims.

The bilingual Web Claims Submission system provides a fast and easy way of submitting valuable claims information directly into an existing IBC database, assisting members of the insurance industry, and IBC’s crime analysts and investigators in identifying organized insurance fraud. The database facilitates the sharing of claims information among insurance industry stakeholders. IBC member companies can then view the data using Web Claims Search to uncover possible indicators of fraud.

“Our analysis of data can only be as effective as the quality of data we receive,” said Terri MacLean, IBC’s Executive vice president of Information and Investigations. “This new system is extremely important to the insurance industry because it provides us with access to timely information that can help curtail insurance crime like organized auto theft and staged accidents.”

IBC gives much of the credit for the introduction of the Web Claims Submission to Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company of Canada, which conducted a pilot project using the new system.

“Wawanesa spearheaded the pilot and provided us with valuable feedback to improve the product,” said MacLean.”

The Web Claims Submission system offers several features that will benefit the insurance industry. “Wawanesa was pleased to work with IBC to develop a system that is easy to use, readily accessible and user-friendly,” said Barbara Raison, claims manager, Wawanesa Insurance, Winnipeg Region. “In particular, the summary report feature is a quick method to determine the status of a particular claim.”
