New Jersey Awards Cash to Fight Drunken Driving

New Jersey’s Highway Traffic Safety Division is giving more than $1.2 million to 165 police departments to combat drunken driving during the holiday season.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will take place between Friday and Jan. 2.

Each department will receive $7,500 to pay for saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints.

Last year, the crackdowns resulted in 1,575 driving while intoxicated arrests.

Police also issued 4,728 speeding tickets and 3,269 seatbelt summonses.
