New York Releases PSA for Work Zone Safety Campaign

The family of a New York Department of Transportation employee killed on the job five years ago is reminding motorists to drive safely in highway construction work zones.

Garry Farrell’s wife and three children appear in a new video public service announcement being aired across the state starting this week.

Farrell, of Holland Patent in Oneida County, was a 48-year-old DOT maintenance worker who was hit by a vehicle and killed while flagging traffic in a work zone in 2009.

In the PSA video, his wife Michele tells motorists to slow down and be aware of their surroundings while driving through work zones.

DOT officials say there were more than 500 accidents in New York work zones last year, resulting in two fatalities and nearly 150 injuries.
