Rhode Island Legislation to Allow Digital Proof of Car Insurance

March 5, 2014

Motorists would no longer have to rifle through their glove compartment for proof of auto insurance under legislation pending before Rhode Island lawmakers.

The bill would allow motorists to use their smartphones or other mobile electronic devices to offer police proof of auto insurance during a traffic stop. The proposal is up for a vote in the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

If the bill is enacted, motorists would be allowed to access their policies with their phones to prove they have insurance. Police would be prohibited from accessing anything else on the driver’s phone other than the insurance information.
