In response to the growing popularity of mini-split heat pumps, the state of Maine has set new professional rules on their installation.
The heat pumps transfer heat from outside air to the inside of a building, and are considered highly efficient because their main fuel is outside air and therefore free.
But they also use electricity, and installation requires some skill with wiring.
New rules from the Maine The Department of Professional and Financial Regulation say oil burner technicians, along with electricians, can do that wiring work for one- and two-family dwellings.
