New York Official: Long Island Needs Sandy Repairs for Boater Safety

A New York official says quick repair work on Superstorm Sandy damage is needed to ensure boater safety around Long Island’s popular Jones Beach.

The storm destroyed a light tower and a jetty there.

Sen. Charles Schumer is urging the federal government to replace the main navigational light tower at the end of a jetty at Jones Inlet.

He says that the repair work currently isn’t scheduled to start until next year.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Monday that repairing the light also involves a more complicated repair of a jetty near the site.

The spokesman says the repairs can sometimes take years, but plans are for the work to be completed in Fiscal Year 2014.
