GEICO Names Richard Solowan AVP

Richard Solowan has been named assistant vice president of the GEICO companies. He will be responsible for the personal injury protection (PIP) staff counsel operation in New York.

Solowan joined the company in 1992 as an attorney in the company’s staff counsel department, where he defended GEICO and policyholders throughout Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. He was later named lead attorney in Westchester County, a position he held before relocating to the company’s Office of Legislative Counsel in Washington, D.C. in 1999. He was the lead legislative attorney on behalf of GEICO when the company re-entered New Jersey in 2004.

Since then, Solowan has served as senior counsel for New York and New Jersey representing GEICO before the legislatures and insurance departments, most recently handling the multitude of issues that arose due to Super Storm Sandy.

Solowan received a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada, and graduated from the University of Alberta Law School in Edmonton, Canada. He is a member of the New York bar.

“We are very pleased to have someone with Richard’s extensive experience in this new position,” said Tony Nicely, GEICO’s CEO and president. “His familiarity with staff counsel and his involvement with New York PIP regulation for more than 10 years will be a great asset as he takes on these new responsibilities.”
