New Judge Wants More Facts in Red Light Camera Suit

A federal judge is hearing more information about New Jersey’s red light camera program as he weighs whether to approve a class action settlement.

A Jackson resident sued last year after receiving a ticket in East Windsor. He claims the town operated the red light cameras illegally because it failed to follow requirements for the timing of yellow lights.

The state Transportation Department temporarily suspended the red light cameras in about 20 towns last summer over those concerns. All were ultimately reactivated.

U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan on Monday is hearing from attorneys for the plaintiff as well for Arizona-based contractor American Traffic Solutions. Lawyers for several towns also are present.

A representative of ATS told Sheridan about 50 percent of red-light pictures taken don’t result in traffic summonses.
