I find the “plea deal” phenomenon reprehensible. How dare our legal system compromise itself and negotiate penalties? Pretty much emasculates the entire justice system.
Sad, that money & powerful attorneys can make a vehicular homicide into ‘probation and community service”. Had this student not been a “Yaley” he would have not gotten the easy sentence he did. Nothing will ever replace this young woman in her family’s life and the driver will be able to complete his expensive education and go onto a fruitful and profitable life. I guess money does win over conscience.
Money says it all. Had this student not had the funds for the expensive (and effective) attorney, he would not be looking a probation and community service. Let’s see, kill someone while driving negligently with beer kegs = community service, good education, and a nice, profitable career…perhaps as an attorney?
If the young driver stays clean, I’m all for giving him a second chance. Even hardened criminals are given three chances before they are considered a lost cause.
