5-Alarm Fire Destroys Pennsylvania Apartment Building

May 24, 2012

Authorities in western Pennsylvania say a five-alarm fire destroyed an apartment building, leaving 17 people homeless but causing no serious injuries.

Fire officials in Pittsburgh said the fast-moving blaze was reported at about 11:30 a.m. Monday in the South Side Slopes apartment building.

Deputy Chief Dan Hennessy said firefighters went into the building but quickly retreated because of the danger.

Firefighters then focused on trying to keep the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings.

The fire went to five alarms before the blaze was declared under control at 2:18 p.m.

Authorities said one firefighter went to a hospital for treatment of a shoulder injury.

American Red Cross officials said they assisted 10 adults and seven children with temporary shelter, clothing and food.
