New York Park Struck by Raging Brush Fire

April 11, 2012

Four acres of West Hills County Park on Long Island, N.Y., have been destroyed by a raging brush fire.

Firefighters took nearly three hours to extinguish the blaze, which was reported late Sunday night.

Melville assistant fire chief Jason Bernfeld tells Newsday that firefighters had to struggle with steep hills. Some used all-terrain vehicles to put out embers and small fires and transport firefighters and equipment.

The National Weather Service says there is an elevated risk for brush fires in parts of the metropolitan area.
