Witness: Penn. Crash Victim Pushed Stroller to Safety

September 22, 2011

A passenger in the car that fatally struck a Pennsylvania woman pushing a stroller says the victim was able to push her two young children out of the path of the sport-utility vehicle that killed her.

Carl Denig says he saw Benjamin Cope drink several beers and smoke marijuana the evening before the June 2010 crash that killed 36-year-old Lisa Styles in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon.

Denig testified Tuesday during Cope’s vehicular homicide trial. He told the court he wasn’t sure if Cope stopped at the intersection when Styles stepped off the curb, pushing her children, then ages 1 and 3, in a stroller.

Cope’s attorneys say his consumption of marijuana the night before had nothing to do with the crash.
