Vermont Hospital Says Errors Made in Pedestrian Death

August 25, 2011

Vermont’s largest hospital has acknowledged errors were made in the treatment of a 20-year-old Burlington man who had been hit by a car in his wheelchair, but was released from the hospital and died hours later.

An autopsy determined Zachary Stamatis died as a result of brain injury and a skull fracture caused by the July 9 accident. He was found dead the next morning in his home.

Fletcher Allen Health Care spokesman Mike Noble told the Burlington Free Press that a thorough review was conducted of the treatment provided to Stamatis and officials discovered errors were made.

Noble did not say what the errors were or if employees were disciplined.

Stamatis’s foster mother, Mary Provost, says discussions are ongoing about “a legacy for Zach.”
