State police say a 46-year-old Vermont man has died of injuries caused by heavy machinery in a construction accident in northern New York.
Troopers said Wednesday that Michael Loyer of South Burlington was working for Trenchless Technologies of New England, a subcontractor for Steven Fuller Excavation, at a railroad bed in Port Kent, just south of Plattsburgh. He was operating an auger as he worked to install a 3-foot-diameter pipe.
The auger became bound in the pipe and Loyer was thrown to the ground and pinned there by the auger.
Another construction worker, Noah Rounds, used a backhoe to lift the auger off Loyer. Rounds and another worker administered CPR until an ambulance arrived to take Loyer to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident remains under investigation.
