what is fair for the goose is fair the gander! if they are trying to make every driver to pay attention, even more so with those driving emergency vehicles. they need to remain focus on the road. a cop should not be on the phone, mo matter what the case maybe until he’s at the finish line!
now the question: how long does an observation have to be? what if i just got called, picked up and then moved it to a speaker mode! during the pick and hitting speaker the cop spotted me on the phone, does that allow him to give me a ticket? if i go to court, will have a have a picture of me on the phone? and here’s another, what if the cop is driving his personal car, because he is a cop, will be exempt also? i can imagine where things will go if things goto court!
My goodness, this has been a law in Chicago for at least 4 years now. And I am sure it has saved lives… not everyone abides by it, and those who don’t, well that’s their choice, you get caught, you get caught, you pay the fine. I use the speaker on my phone when I’m driving. Fixed the dilemma!
Well, there probably is a very good reason why these individuals do not have to follow the ban. And I am sure if they are just civilians, they are expected to follow the ban just like the rest of us. This should be a nation-wide law.
Agree. Should be a law of the land. What’s more, the fine should be much higher and points should be placed on the DL on the second offense. Claims are mounting in this area for rear end collisions, over the yellow line collisions and just running off the road. Hand held devices are suspect in most cases around here.

Agreed! I once saw a man driving he vehicle while shaving with electric shaver. Right up there with women putting on their makeup. A distraction is a distraction. I rear ended someone back in 2008 inching up in traffic at a stop light in morning traffic, cell phone rang, I looked down and bang. I hit the guy in front of me. Learned a big lesson that day… don’t take your eyes off the road. I try hard to practice what I preach.

i agree on the ban, but it needs to be everyone w/o exception, including police and emergency personell. i wish they had it in VA!

It should be illegal for a driver to eat while the vehicle is in motion as well as applying makeup, shaving or looking in the visor mirror.

here’s one that some folks probably have not seen: changing clothes in the car!
