so an apple a day will not keep the liability away… but, the charger that she was using, was it made for the same laptop or did she use a different one on the laptop? this could have made a difference… also, what if the laptop was still on, the heat of the laptop could have set the fire as well. if that is the case, then the owner of the laptop would be at-fault and not the electronics… could be an interesting follow…

This goes under the category – ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Chubb has the funds to pay lawyers to bring this suit? For a $75,000 claim? Are you kidding me?

This type of loss will never stop as long as all of our manufacturing is in China. What do people expect? Our manufactured products today are absolute garbage. Try finding a store out there, even a small, family owned hardware store, where anything is made in the USA. We have been sold out and China is laughing at us all the way to the bank.

I’d like to see Chubb and the rest of the industry agressively pursue some of the the fraudulent & phoney liability claims that they roll over and pay $15 – $25k for since its “cheaper” to pay ’em then fight ’em.

It would be nice to keep these jobs in the USA but consumers are not willing to pay more for the products made in the US. No one is going to pay for $60 for a charger when they can get it for $20-30.

Before my insurance days, my company tried to make a product in the US and it was not feasable. We could make a solid, functional product in China and South Korea for 1/3 the price it would cost to do the same thing in the US. If we took the high road as some suggest, we would have been out of business. It comes down to the consumer. If they want made in the USA, then they need to make the decision to pay for it and they are not willing to do so on commodity products.

Guitars are a great example that illustrates how we can keep the maunfacturing in the US and but not for commodity products. Fenders make models in the US ($800-$1,500), Mexico($500), South Korea ($400-600), Indonesia ($180-350)and China ($150). Obviously the lower price tag reflects lower quality components but they can only afford to make the absolutely best ones in the US to make the margins to meet consumer expectations. This advantage is going away since asian countries are catching up with the US in top notch guitars and at more palatable prices.

It is important to note that the myth that we don’t make anyting anymore is a myth. The US is the largest manufacturer in the world, producing 20% of all manufacturing output. China is 19%. Yes they are catching up but we are not going to see the US making run of the mill widgets anytime soon unless labor costs go down. Plain and simple.

By the time the $150 guitar gets to the USA shelves, what are we really paying? $600-$1100? Keep in mind that is just the retail price-Add to it the amount that we are charged in various State and Federal Taxes that go to pay unemployment and welfare to the people that are out of work because we imported that guitar from China. Are we really saving or is it costing us the same or more?

The story referred to a “massive” house fire. Then I read futher and see it was $75K. Guess houses are smaller in CT.

Apple makes good products for the most part. They dont make the batteries though, they have farm that out.

Also, they are assembled in California, not over seas.

    Jay,
I echo those thoughts…why isn’t the insurer educating their policyholders about the risk? The batttery charger issue is a known hazard. Shame on Chubb.
