Will someone explain to me the theory behind “hate crime” legislation? Why is one murder worse than another? This has never made sense to me. All crimes involve hate, not just crimes against minorities. Why a special class?

I am sometimes labeled a liberal (incorrectly) but even I have a tough time understanding why a hate crime murder is any worse than any other type of murder. Are the victims any less dead?

By the way, in all the news articles I have seen regarding this case, no one seems to point out if the victim (as it WAS truly sad) was a legal or illegal immigrant, not that it would matter, but I am curious.

I agree, what exactly is the difference between a “hate” crime and a “get to know you” crime?
All crime is “hate” crime, does anyone out there disagree???

I hate what happened here but I can’t help but laugh at the statement “A lot of these kids felt they were supported by legislators”. Do really think they knew who their legislators were/are? Do they know what a legislator is?

Also known as “thought crime,” because if you are thinking certain thoughts when you’re stabbing a guy the govt hates you more than if you were thinking other thoughts.

The premise is that a hate crime is intended to not only harm the immediate victim, but “send a message” to others in their demographic (i.e. gays, immigrants, republicans, etc.) to instill fear to an entire group. I am not =saying whether it works as a deterrant or not, but that is the logic.

The only thing “hate crime” bills are designed to do is pander to constituencies of the Democrat Party. Period.

    Al,
That may be true, but at least Democrats respond to the wishes of their constiuents. I am waiting for the Republicans to ban flag burning, gay marriage and abortion, institute tort reform, and a host of other issues they say they will do to get votes, but really do not care about. After they are elected, you never hear them talk about those issues until re-election time.

It really goes to motive in determining the type of crime that will be charged. A hate crime is especially heinous since the only motive is a person’s ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Yes, the victim is still just as dead, but the reason why is the difference.
