Feds Rap 2 Firms for Scaffold Collapse at New York College

Federal work place safety officials say they’ve cited two contractors for the scaffolding collapse that injured six workers at a construction site last June at Binghamton University in New York.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Tuesday that Apple Roofing Co. of Syracuse and CFI Sales and Service of Brackney, Pa., violated safety standards, resulting in a scaffold platform bridge falling 40 feet at a five-story dormitory under construction in suburban Vestal.OSHA officials say safety chains designed to hold the platform bridge in place weren’t on the scaffold.

OSHA has issued Apple Roofing five serious citations and proposes $12,300 in fines. CFI was issued two serious citations, with $2,100 in proposed fines.

The companies have 15 business days to meet with OSHA or contest the citations and fines.
