Court Upholds Verdict for Connecticut Woman Wrongly Diagnosed

The Connecticut Supreme Court has upheld a verdict in favor of a woman who sued her gynecologist and Yale University School of Medicine claiming doctors misdiagnosed her with cancer and performed an unnecessary hysterectomy.

The high court ruled unanimously Friday in favor of Michelle DiLieto of North Branford. Her trial attorney, Rodney Margol, said the ruling means an award of about $13 million.

Helen Dodson, a Yale spokeswoman, said Monday the university was disappointed and was calculating the amount of the award, which the high court adjusted based on when interest started accruing.

DiLieto had a hysterectomy in 1995 after being diagnosed with a potentially fatal cancer of the uterus. She said doctors failed to tell her she didn’t have cancer and led her to believe she did.
