Dam Burst Causes Flooding, Evacuations in Vermont

May 5, 2010

Fire officials in Calais, Vermont, say seven homes had to be evacuated after a beaver dam in a pond burst, sending a torrent of water over another dam and flooding parts of two roads.

East Montpelier Fire Department Chief John Audy says a section of the beaver dam gave way about 7 p.m., flooding the main intersection in the village of Adamant, which is part of Calais. But he said there were concerns that the water _ which was four feet deep over the road at one point _ would cause nearby Sodom Pond to overflow, triggering flooding in East Montpelier.

No injuries were reported.
