New Jersey environmental officials say the weekend’s fierce rain and wind storm caused extensive erosion to beaches in Ocean and Monmouth counties.
The Department of Environmental Protection said Monday that its coastline survey showed numerous vertical cuts to the dunes, particularly in Keansburg, Sea Bright, Long Branch, Surf City and Long Beach Township.
It said four houses were undermined in Long Beach Township. The municipal engineer was assessing the damage.
Farther south, beach erosion was more localized. DEP said North Wildwood, Ocean City and Cape May City were hardest hit.
DEP said it is also inspecting dams and found that the Lake Shawnee Dam in Jefferson Township, Morris County, had partially failed. But there were no injuries or property damage.
