In related news… New York’s bill banning the use of all motorized vehicles was narrowly defeated…

However, the state is doing a bang-up job protecting the public from burn barrels.

We had a case in town, last May, where a girl, age 18 lost her life while texting, when she drove across the road & hit an oncoming car, killing the age 69 retiree.
Her nephew, age 9 is still on life support.
This girl, I’m guessing, couldn’t even hold an handkerchief, but a BlackBerry..
It’s idiocy, & stupidity, and the severest of penalties (aside from death) should be imposed

Hey Urie… alcohol and cigarettes contribute to countless deaths every single day. So do guns. So do cars, with or without phones.

Even if you never leave the house, you can still die from diabetes, obesity, cancer, fire, carbon monoxide, falling airplane parts, violent crime, etc.

What about the age 69 retiree who crosses the center line and kills someone simply because they shouldn’t have been driving any longer? Shouldn’t we ban anyone over 65 from driving?

The point is, past a certain point (distracted driving laws already on the books), any attempts to reduce additional risk factors to zero are futile (texting bans).

Urie, it is exactly your method of logic that has real world results such as bans on running in schoolyard playgrounds. After all, someone could hurt themselves that way! And, isn’t it really “for the children” after all?

so, if there is already a law banning the use of a cellphone while driving, why did they have to add an additional alw for driving and texting? afterall, don’t you have to use a cellphone to text?! so, is doubling the violations to collect even more money? this is actually a waste of time and energy to create a new law! again, you have to use a cellphone to text either to send or recieve. the cellphone will tell the police when you opened the file or sent the file, even if you delete.

so the NY legislators were just wasting your NY TAXPAYING dollars to create what? more revenue because they are short funds for the NY! um..um… maybe if they would write valid tickets that would stick and collect the payments, it might help!

Wudchuk, you have a point, but the reality is the only law we need is one against distracted driving. Wait- we have laws against reckless driving.

I don’t care if someone’s not in their lane because of the phone, the radio, the cheeseburger or they’re putting on makeup- the crime they’re committing is driving while distracted. I don’t care if they’re on a phone as long as they’re in their lane and keeping pace with traffic.
