In the pre-op station with a nurse, who was working from a checklist, he asked about how to avoid removing the wrong eye. She said well that happens to be the next step. She reached for a sharpie marker and helped him put a circle around the eye that was to be worked on. He thought she was kidding that it was next step, but then she showed him the check list and it said “mark correct body part”.
Her reply (which made tons of sense) was that they wanted to avoid making mistakes as well and that they had implemented this procedure years ago.
