    Another case of “I’ll only be in there for a second”….. if they survived I am sure that is what would have said. Same type of attitude gets people crushed in trenches. Come on already! Yes it CAN happen to you!

    Boy, you people really don’t do your jobs well. If you looked, you’d have found out that there was a prior fatal “accident” at the same “recycling” company in 2005, supposedly investigated by OSHA. You might have also found out that the recycling company is misclassified as a second hand paper dealer. The tragedy here is that three people are dead, and the site where it happened is probably also the site of insurance fraud.
    A father and son, and an employee of the recycling company are dead and you publish jokes about unions. Way to go!

    Hate to see anyone die at work; this was probably a small family business that took risks and paid the price, a high one for this family.

    I think the word ‘Putrid’ could have been left out; the event is bad enough without having to make it sound even more horrible.

    And Rosie: Even union workers have died in confined spaces;

    It doesn’t matter who you are; if you do not follow the appropriate safety protocol, bad things can happen.

    Dont you think if you work in this type of situation, you would know to take appropriate safety measures like masks and respirators? It’s a tragic event, but sadly one that could have probably been avoided.

    I’ve watched enough Dirty Jobs episodes to know better.

    I have a feeling they knew what they should have been doing if they have been in that business for any length of time.

    @ Clean, I agree with you. You’d think the smell would have tipped them off to use some kind of equipment.

    I rarely read the comments anymore. It is an ongoing thing among these people to crack jokes about stories they have not investigated and know little about. Believe me your comment will do nothing to discourage them. It is best to read the article and keep your comments to yourself and don’t read theirs.

    Hey Darwin and G et all,

    I wasn’t making jokes or trying to belittle the situation. (Nor did I make union cracks, although others have).

    Personally I was just saying people should know their job situations and use their head, protect themselves. And also that it is a tragic event.

    But yes, the commenters here typically just make wisecracks and/or turn every story into a political issue, which I find very annoying.
