Massachusetts Police Cite Driver of Overturned Oil Truck

April 23, 2009

Police say the driver of a tanker truck that spilled 10,000 gallons of home heating oil when it overturned in Revere, Massachusetts was speeding.

State police say 62-year-old Allyn Thompson of Lunenburg was cited for speeding and marked lanes violations after the truck tipped at about 5:40 a.m. on Monday at Brown Circle, a rotary where Routes 107 and 60 meet.

Thompson was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with minor injuries.

Routes 107 and 60, Broadway, Squire Road and American Legion Highway were closed for about four hours after the accident, snarling the morning commute.

A spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection says some oil spilled into a saltwater marsh and is being contained with absorbent booms and cleaned with vacuum trucks.
