A Connecticut legislative committee has endorsed a proposal banning the sale of plastic baby bottles, food containers and cups containing a controversial chemical.
The substance, known as bisphenol A or BPA, is commonly used to make plastic shatterproof. Some scientists and activists believe long-term exposure is harmful to humans, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration say the chemical is safe.
Connecticut is among several states considering laws to ban products containing BPA. The bill would make it illegal to manufacture, sell or distribute containers and baby bottles made with the chemical.
The prohibitions would be phased in over the next few years if the bill is approved by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
