There aren’t many altar boys older than 14 so this clown had at least 26 years to think about this. None of the alleged victims came forward until they smelled “green”. Other than the obvious, I’ve yet to hear about real physical or psychological injury to warrant a suit. The compensation should be the Catholic church be required to develop a plan to eliminate this problem and monitor behavior. Throwing millions of dollars at people makes no sense nor does it contribute to the solution. The church will now have less resources to correct the problem. BUT…our legal system is flawed in defining “compensation” as money and the personal injury attorneys will never let concept be changed. The fact is that money won’t compensate beyond a reasonable point. Then it becomes ridiculous. Even plaintiffs espouse that “no amount of money can compensate me for my loss”. OK, you don’t get any. How can an accused priest defend himself after 30 -40 years? Allowing these suits to continue is absured as are the settlements. This little prick gets $8.7 million because HE SAYS some priest grabbed his *** 26 years ago? Give me a break.

If anyone believes that the Catholic church has a corner on the molestation market, they probably still believe in the Easter Bunny. Could it be that

Glad to see that the church is appealing &/or at least fighting it now. They are becoming old & weary.

I pretty much agree with your sentiments. Obviously it is hard to prove something happened or didn’t happen 26 years ago. Seems to me that if there is enough evidence to establish that the crime did take place, then perhaps the victim is owed something. I think the victim needs to beable to show that the molestation that took place has somehow caused permament and lasting effects on the victims life. Then maybe you have the defendent pay for counseling or whatever. Making the guy filthy rich and of course the lawyers even richer is just wrong. It is hard to accept that something heinous happened 26 years ago and the victim just now comes forward. It kind of makes me believe that the crime either didn’t happen or the victim was able to deal with the consequences of the crime. However, I do admit, that I’ve not walked a mile in the victims shoes so don’t really know how to sympathize with him.
