Connecticut Officials Say Arson Levels Cottages

March 17, 2009

A Connecticut fire official says a blaze that has destroyed several abandoned cottages on a Stratford beach was obviously set.

The fires that burned downed four cottages Sunday hit beach-front cottages on Long Beach, on the Bridgeport-Stratford town line.

Bridgeport firefighters had to reach the scene by boat, armed with hoes and shovels because there’s no water on the island. One fire chief says Stratford firefighters were able to get some equipment to the scene including a floating pump.

Last year, three cottages were set on fire by a suspected arsonist. There are about three dozen dilapidated cottages on Long Beach.

In 1996 a bridge out to the island caught fire and it’s no longer usable.
