It’s a sad commentary when businesses are expected top compromise their standards to accomodate some idiot with corn rows and a beard. Some companies want to project a professional image and don’t want Rasta men interacting with their clients. That’s their right. They even offered this slimeball a different job and still wasn’t happy. That’s gratitude for you. I’d check his papers and make sure he’s in this country legally, then I’d kick him square in his Rastafarian a ss. Leave it to NJ to make such a ruling.

Why not just keep making more & more exceptions so that there won’t be any rules to follow at all? Oh, wait, I just described our government.

I once worked for a company in the late 90,s, where men could not have any facial hair, the hair on the back of their head couldn’t touch the collar, no earings, no tattoos, etc… – The company believed that this projected a “clean” image to the buying public. These features are all voluntary, not like skin color or gender (at least for most people). If the tenets of your religion is so important to a person (which it should be), then do not be offended when a prospective employer does not agree (as long as it is not discriminatory on the bases of race/color, gender, etc…). Create your own business and hire the people that you believe will further that business.
By the way… Rastafarians are generally nice guys, just like any other people of many other religions. Another thing, they are not all foreigners, as alluded to by one commentor. Years ago, there was a story in the Times about a rastafarian who worked on Wall Street as a broker, with his pinstripe suit, briefcase and dreads. Wonder how he got that judge for a major brokerage house.
