What possible reason can there be for “rent control” in New York city in the year 2009? Every time government interferes with the free market bad things happen – here is just another example.

The insuring carriers (if any) and/or ISO should be inspecting these buildings. Not that they are responsible, but where were they?

Are you serious? Insurance inspectors only come around renewal time and then it’s only once every 5 years or so (at least that’s the way it is here in the City) or probably longer since it’s NYC. Not only that, since they didn’t get permits, how can you assume that they have insurance? Especially with rent control…they are most likely losing money on their investment and don’t care.
Rent Control started all becuase of the few, greedy, slumlords who own these buildings and don’t care. They made it difficult for those good landlords who do care and play by the rules. (My family and I included). I’m surprised that NYC doesn’t have nosey neighbors?! In my neighborhood, if you so much as to even take a can of paint out to paint your garage door, someone isn’t calling the permit bureau to see if you’re allowed to do it! Then again this is NYC…they may have called and have been put on a waiting list! :)

Anon, from waht I understand, if you didnt have rent control, you would have a hard time hiring teachers, waiters, and other essential workers who dont make a lot of money.

They would have to commute for many hours and would hardly break even after all the travel.

Therefore, wages for these people might have to be increased to the point that businesses would be crippled.

So, rent control is kind of like a tax break for the businesses, and a break for less well off workers.

I do understand and respect your line of thinking though.
