Buyer Sought for Damaged Maryland Home

October 29, 2008

The Cambridge Historic Preservation Commission is trying to help find a buyer for the J. Benjamin Brown house on High Street.

The 18th century home on High Street was heavily damaged in a May 10 arson. City officials ordered in May that the home be demolished, but the commission voted unanimously in September to stay the demolition.

Owner Douglass Whittington says he doesn’t want to demolish the house but can’t afford the restoration. The fire damage was estimated at $500,000.

Potential buyers can learn about possible grants and tax incentives at a meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dorchester County Public Library meeting room.
