The fire that disabled a Hinesburg cheese plant last month could end up hurting dairy farmers who supplied milk to the facility.
Before the Sept. 29 fire, the Saputo Cheese USA plant was receiving about a million pounds of milk a day from 88 dairy farmers in western Vermont and New York.
Diane Bothfeld of the Vermont Department of Agriculture Food and Markets says that’s about 10 to 12 percent of the state’s milk production.
Now the farmers are trying to find new markets for their milk without driving up their expenses because of increased transportation fees.
Repairs are under way at the Saputo plant. Officials hope to resume production within two months.
The Saputo plant makes mozzarella and other specialty cheeses.
