Virginia Woman Sentenced for Cashing Fraudulent Insurance Check

September 23, 2008

According to Virginia State Police (VSP) Special Agent Russell L. Eley III, Renita Yvette Wilson Meredith claimed the life insurance settlement check she received for her son who died in 2003 was “a blessing.” However, that blessing turned out to be a forgery.

In May 2005, Meredith apparently cashed a $4,250 check with a cashing service in Norfolk, Va. that returned to the service after the bank determined the check fraudulent. An investigation by VSP was said to have uncovered a false insurance company name and a bogus address.

Meredith was reportedly found guilty of uttering, forgery and obtaining money by false pretense and sentenced to a total of nine years in
prison. She was also apparently ordered to make full restitution to the
check cashing service in amount of $4,250.
