Connecticut Firefighter Hit with New Arson Charges

September 2, 2008

Police in Groton, Connecticut have filed new arson charges against a volunteer firefighter with the Mystic Fire Department.

William Celtruda, a probationary volunteer officer, was already facing a first-degree arson charge for allegedly setting a fire that destroyed a historic house on Library Street in July.

Police filed more arson charges on Wednesday related to two suspicious fires earlier this month that caused only minor damage. No one was injured in any of the three fires.

The 21-year-old Celtruda, who lives with his grandparents in Groton, worked for the Mystic Fire Department for about six months and is part of a family with longtime connections to the department. He is being held on bond and is to return to court next month.
