Upstate New York Swamped by Flooding from Rain Runoff

August 13, 2008

Authorities in an Albany-area city are assessing the damage from flooding caused by heavy rains.

Fire officials say Monday’s flooding in Rensselaer, across the Hudson River from Albany, submerged numerous cars and forced 27 people from their homes.

First Assistant Fire Chief Mike Stammel says heavy runoff flooded streets and basements across sections of the city. Part of the parking lot at the Amtrak station was flooded but Stammel says service wasn’t interrupted.

Residents and emergency crews used small boats and rubber rafts to get around flooded areas.

Stammel says most of the flood waters have receded Tuesday morning.

There were no reports of injuries.
