“It’s not about the money”, so what was accomplished by paying this kid $30K and for what? All of the things he described go on in high school locker rooms everyday. He stayed on the team for 3 years and elected to put up with it so how bad could it be? Hockey players are pretty “gritty” so why didn’t he just defend himself by knocking a few heads? Settling this kind of suit makes no sense.

Well, at least there’s no prayer or Bible reading going on at that school.

companies regularly have to weigh the odds of complete exoneration at trial, or the chance of being found even slightly at fault and having to pay all associated attorney fees. looking at the bottom line, claims managers unfortunately have to “cut and run” after looking at the odds: it’s cheaper to pay $30k than risk a jury awarding $1 in the claim and not realizing the insurance company pays ALL of the cost. it’s morally bad, but financially better. blame the system; we tolerate it!
