Poor *******. 64 years old and dead before he could enjoy retirement. At the risk of sounding calloused, what in the hell was he doing standing UNDER a freaking freight elevator in the first place?
One of the mixed blessings of being an ins adjuster for many years is carrying over the lessons of these claims into your own life by continually asking “what can go wrong here, and how can I thwart it”. Of course, my family just thinks I’m paranoid; but so far, it works for me.
As an adjuster and parent, I preach to my kid the importance of risk avoidance and risk mitigation, but not to the extent that they have to live in a bubble. There is a certain level of acceptable risk in life, as well as unnecessary risk. My wife tells me that a 3-year cannot understand the theory of risk avoidance. He sure gives me many teaching opportunitities

You are not paranoid and I agree completely with what you’ve said. It really is a two-edged sword.
Yeah, you aren’t paranoid, just a realist. As an agent I’m always asking myself the same question: What can go wrong and who’s at fault if it does?
