Heavy Snow Taking Toll on Roofs in New Hampshire

March 4, 2008

Fire officials are warning New Hampshire residents to clear the snow and ice off their roofs.

With rain forecast for Tuesday, the extra weight may be too much for some roofs. Snow is being blamed for two roof cave-ins over the weekend. A warehouse roof collapsed in Franklin and a condominium recreation building roof collapsed in Concord.

Andover Elementary and Middle School is closed Monday after the town determined snow had weakened the roof over the middle school wing. The Pine Tree School in Conway closed late last week after an inspection found ice build up on the roof had forced the chimney away from the roof. The school was to reopen Monday.

Fire officials say people should also look for water damage from roofs that have been cleared of snow. They say the damage might have weakened the structure.
