Something’s amiss here. How does the guy allegedly die of “secondary asbestos” exposure while his father and sibling are fine? Leave it to the Soprano State jurors in Bergen County to go off the deep end. $30M is an absurd award to the survivors even IF the case had merit. People are pretty cavalier about spending other people’s money.
The asbestos issue is an economic black hole that needs to be closed. It’s unfortunate that the courts applied modern day standards retro-actively to this problem to provide a venue for litigation. Nobody knew the long term effects of asbestos way back when.
Asbestos litigation is the triumph of emotion over reason. Holding manufacturers for civil damages in products cases has always been a stretch for me-unless-it can be shown by competent evidence they KNEW beforehand what they were placing into the consumption chain was harmful – not the case here
Like the cigarette manufacturers, the asbestos manufacturers knew for decades that they were killing people and, like the cigarette manufacturers, they tried to cover it up. NOW THEY’RE GETTING HAMMERED. BOO HOO!
