There is no question that brilliant is correct. However in the real world people are prone to all the foibles of being human.

There are those of us in fire protection that have dedicated our lives to saving the lives of others either by physically rescueing them or applying the fire code process to hazards. We do not quantify humans’ awareness or mental ability. We consider every living human worthy of saving and consider it a high priviledge to be allowed to do so.

Your best protection is not being stupid or careless. What’s next in our endless search to idiot proof everything on the face of the planet to compensate for human failing? Why not an R2D2 robot for every citizen that will protect us from ourselves 24/7? That way we won’t have to be personally responsible or accountable for anything we do.

Chief…..very noble and appreciated. On the other hand, those of us who are personally responsible and have some modicum of common sense do not wish to have to pay for the 1% who are not. I’m sure the photocell detectors are great, but the incidence of problems like the one described is too low to require everyone to comply. Those of us in insurance have to balance cost with risk. I’ve seen many cases where a conventional detector would have save lives, but the ignorant and irresponsible tenants either disconneted the battery because they didn’t like to hear it go off when they were cooking, or were too lazy to replace the battery. Great idea, but nothing will alter the course of human frailties.
