Former Del. AG Fined for Traffic Accident

One of the state’s most prominent attorneys was ordered in October to pay $41.40 for a traffic accident last April on Interstate-95 near Newport.

Former attorney general candidate Ferris Wharton was fined after pleading guilty in Justice of the Peace Court to following another vehicle too closely.

Under a plea deal, a more serious charge of leaving the scene of a property damage accident was dropped after the other driver told investigators that Wharton’s insurance had paid for the damage to her car.

Wharton said last year he drove away from the scene because he didn’t realize he had been in an accident. He said he called police later after he noticed damage to his bumper.

Wharton declined to comment to The News-Journal for a story in Wednesday’s editions.
